Take any earbuds out of your ears first. Start with the volume low and turn it up only as needed.

Which side is missing?

Stopped. The chirp plays for 60 seconds at a time.

  1. Check that your earbuds still show as connected in your phone's or computer's Bluetooth settings.
  2. Turn your device's volume up, then press Play chirp.
  3. Stand still in a quiet room, listen for the chirp, then walk toward it. Look under cushions, in bags and in pockets.

How it works

The chirp is a short, rising beep repeated three times with a pause, made by your browser's built-in audio and played through whatever your device is using for sound. When you pick Left or Right, the sound goes only to that side. It stops by itself after 60 seconds, and you can stop it at any time.

It can only reach earbuds that are still connected and receiving sound. If yours have disconnected, switched off or run out of battery, start with what to do when lost earbuds are off.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I hear the chirp from my earbuds?

The page plays sound through whatever your phone or computer is using for audio right now. If the chirp comes from the phone or computer speaker, your earbuds aren't receiving sound: check that they still show as connected in your Bluetooth settings and that the volume is up. If they've disconnected, this page can't reach them, and your earbud maker's finding feature is the next step.

Does this work with AirPods?

Only while they're connected and receiving sound. For AirPods, Apple's Find My app has its own Play Sound feature: Apple says AirPods play a sound for a few minutes, or until you stop it, if they're out of their case, and you can choose Left or Right while the sound plays. Our AirPods guide walks through it.

Why play the sound in one ear only?

If one earbud is lost and the other is with you, sending the chirp only to the missing side means you hear it from where that earbud is, and the one you have stays quiet. If both are missing, choose Both.

Does this page use Bluetooth, my microphone or my location?

No. It makes the sound with your browser's built-in audio and sends nothing anywhere. It doesn't ask for Bluetooth, microphone or location access.
